Building a successful track record
NB Southern Railway is a short line that has evolved into a success story in a relatively short period of time.
The railway line itself has a long and rich history dating back to its inception in the late 1800’s.
“The building and laying of track known as the “Western Extension” began in 1865 from Saint John. It made its way to Vanceboro in 1871 where it connected with the US railway that eventually made its way though to Montreal and later to the West Coast as CP Rail. The ceremony in Vanceboro was attended by American President Ulysses S Grant. “
By the early 1990’s, CP Rail System was looking to discontinue its rail operations in the Maritimes.
Sensing the importance of keeping a direct rail link to the U.S. Market, the J.D. Irving Group stepped in and purchased the physical railway assets between Saint John and Brownville, Maine.
On January 6, 1995, NB Southern Railway was born and the wheels were set in motion to build a top-quality transportation solutions provider.
The company has experienced significant growth and continuous improvement from day one.
In the spring of 1995, Eastern Maine Railway Company Limited (EMR) came under NBSR operational control.
Today, NBSR has built a strong reputation delivering economical and environmentally-friendly transportations solutions to major oil companies, large chemical producers, pulp and paper companies, automobile manufacturers, consumer products and logistics providers.
NBSR is a proud member of the Irving Group of companies. JD Irving Limited (JDI) is a family owned company with over 125 years of service in forestry, oil and gas, wholesale/retail operations, shipbuilding and transportation services.
